Sweet Alenna

More photos as promised...

Aunty Carmel, Uncle Roushan (my bro) and Baby Alenna: Day 2

Baby Alenna in the bath (meanwhile check out Hoda's hairy arms- lets hope Alenna doesn't inherit the hair factor!): sometime between days 10-13

Alenna being burped in Garden City (shopping center) with Payum Hadian in the background: sometime between days 10-13
Moosh! Sweet little thing... don't you just wanna squeeze her?!

Lesson Plans

Its the last day of prac tomorrow, so I'm busy preparing bottles of (home grown, hand picked, cold pressed, extra virgin) olive oil to give my mentor teachers as presents. Most people about this time of their prac are winding down, not doing much, meanwhile I have assignments to mark, lab books to mark (my year 11s did a heart dissection on Tuesday), and still a pretty full day of lessons tomorrow to prepare so I still have lesson plans coming out of my ears!

I was talking to Dorns about lesson plans and she told me that her mentor teacher was telling her how most teachers have a 5-step lesson plan: 5 steps before walking into the classroom you quickly plan what you are going to do!

Meet Carl

You've already been introduced to Natasha, now I would like to introduce you to Carl...

Carl is a lovely, little, purple single hole punch [note there is no comma between "purple" and "single", sorry ladies, I mean single-hole punch as in he punchs single holes not that he's a hole punch who is single].

Somehow I seem to attract named stationary...

The Da Vinci Code, Mary Magdalene and Europeans...

So I finally got around to seeing the Da Vinci Code movie a couple of nights ago... It was a good movie, but I think I would've found it far more thrilling if I hadn't read the book first- knowing all the characters and what was going to happen next took the edge away (understandably)... Contrary to what Vahdat thought about the role of Robert Langdon, I thought that Tom Hanks was quite the Robert Langdon!

Meanwhile, there was quite an emphasis on Mary Magdalene, and I really didnt know much about her at all, so rather than think that this fictional story was telling the truth I went to the writings of Abdul-Baha to find out more about Mary.

"After the martyrdom of Christ, to Whom be glory, the disciples were greatly disturbed and disheartened. Even Peter had denied Christ and tried to shun Him. It was a woman, Mary Magdalene, who confirmed the wavering disciples in their faith, saying, 'Was it the body of Christ or the reality of Christ that ye have seen crucified? Surely it was His body. His reality is everlasting and eternal; it hath neither beginning nor ending. Therefore, why are ye perplexed and discouraged? Christ always spoke of His being crucified.' Mary Magdalene was a mere villager, a peasant woman; yet she became the means of consolation and confirmation to the disciples of Christ." ('Abdu'l-Baha', The Promulgation of Universal Peace, p. 282)

Sweet lady, that Mary Magdalene!

"Mary Magdalen was a peasant woman. She was without any name and fame or consequence. But her candle is, in the assemblage of the world, lighted till eternity." (Abdu'l-Baha,Baha'i World Faith - Abdu'l-Baha Section, p. 385)

"My hope is that each one of you may become as Mary Magdalen - for this woman was superior to all the men of her time and her reality is ever shining from the horizon of Christ.('Abdu'l-Baha', Divine Philosophy, p. 50)

"The humble peasant girl, Mary Magdalene, - to what splendor she attained! ('Abdu'l-Baha', Divine Philosophy, p. 57)

My mum got sent an email from one of her friends with his view of the Da Vinci Code based on the Baha'i writings. It was quite interesting. One thing that he mentioned which I thought to be rather comical (but maybe I just have a skewif sense of humour) was his take on the whole Europe-trying-to-claim-Christ thing... here is part of his essay:

"In order to minimize the divinity of Jesus, emphasize His human aspect, and exalt the "divine feminine", the author has the villain argue that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, had at least one child through her, and that the descendents of their offspring went to Europe to become the line of the Merovingian kings in France. Trying to reconstruct history so that the Asian origins of the Christian Faith become more European and even American has become popular in more recent centuries. Europeans like to trace their beliefs and culture back to their own Europe rather than to other races, cultures and lands such as are in Asia – just as European historians still have a hard time acknowledging the Hebrew sources of Greek civilization, which they regard as the European origin of European civilization."
For those interested in reading a much more challenging continuation please request this from dgarciaandrade@yahoo.com

To see the whole email please click on my feeble attempt to link to a document on my own computer -->
(ie. I just copied it into a bmp so that its an image)

I hope its not too small or fuzzy to read!

I ...do I have to??

"HELP ME!"

I'm pretty sure they knew each others last names but perhaps they have a bit of a communication issue they need to deal with... My guess is that they were probably one of those couples that have been together for so long that they thought that marriage was the only option.

Fogarty Fellow

Shazza and I are both studying Education (as our loyal readers most probably already know). We both applied to do our second practical placement in a rural school and were accepted to go to Katanning Senior High School. Katanning is about 4 or so hours out of Perth and there is 1 Baha'i living there, its only 1 hour away from Albany though where I have family and there are several Baha'is. Not that the number of Baha'is there is the most important thing, but we know them so its nice, and we can support a B cluster so thats nice too.

Anyway, back on track, the Fogarty Foundation offers scholarships to a few people who want to do a rural placement based on commitment to rural education and academic merit. Shazza Rey and myself both got a scholarship! Woo! OK fine, this year everyone who applied got one- but still, I've never received a scholarship before (I've also never applied for one either so I have a pretty good record so far)!

This is us at the awards ceremony, most of the awards were pretty big (and they probably got a quite a bit of money for them) and so us rural scholarship recipients were having a little joke about how we only got a piece of paper when everyone else got names enscribed on shields and what have you...

Meanwhile my dad was far more excited about the scholarship than I and every now'n'then bursts into song (to the tune of that song you sing at birthdays etc "jolly good fellow"):

For she's a Forgarty fellow, for she's a Fogarty fellow, for she's a Fogarty fe-ellowwww, and so say all of us...

Baby Girl Golestani

Last Sunday my cousin Shanthi had a baby girl! It's their (Shanthi and Hoda Golestani- for those who may or may not know them) first child!! That means her parents are GRANDparents now!! CrAzy!! My mum is freaking out enough just being a grand aunt- imagine what she'll be like when I have a kid! Shanthi's first also means that our grandma is now a GREAT grandma- very special! Grandma had to leave Perth today for 2 months so Alenna (the baby) decided that she would come 2 weeks early so that she could see her great grandma- sweet girl, Alenna...

When I asked at the front desk of the hospital where their room was, I only needed to start saying Golestani and the receptionist finished it off- she knew exactly who I was talking about- they've had about 30 visiters per day!! Gotta love being a Baha'i...

So this is baby Alenna and her mummy, not necessarily the best photo of her but doesnt she look like a little moosh (Alenna, not Shanthi!) -so cute! This photo was taken on Monday so she was 1 day old. I saw her again on Wednesday and she definitely gets cuter by the day!

Maybe I'm just bias coz I'm an aunty but even the midwife said she was one of the cutest (when Hoda asked if she says that to everyone she answered that she just keeps her mouth shut for the ugly ones!!) Even though technically she is my second cousin and not my niece, I am still "Aunty Carmel" -I think it sound great!

More photos to come... stay tuned!

A Great Day...

I helped out with a fundraising Sausage Sizzle the other day at school- that was fun, nearly sold out with only 4 buns left! Then today I saw this sign as I was passing the English office next to the staff room:

"It will be a great day when the schools have all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a new bomber..."

So true...
